LAREDO, TX. (KGNS) - While the future of SB-4 remains in limbo, those who work to secure the southern border are voicing some of their concerns.
Hector Garza, the president of National Border Patrol Council 2455 believes that not enough is being done to protect our border.
With this new law, Garza feels agents would benefit from any additional efforts or support from local or state law enforcement.
In the event that, SB-4 is enforced, Garza said that he hopes that the State of Texas would provide officers with the proper training and guidance on how to execute the law.
“We would expect that the State of Texas would implement proper protocols and regulations to make sure that our peace officers in the State of Texas are properly trained if they’re going to be enforcing this new law that would potentially not pass or be implemented,” said Garza. “At the end of the day, this would be the law of Texas and as peace officers, we would not have the choice to pick and choose which laws we will enforce or not.”
The union represents roughly 18,000 Border Patrol agents and supports personnel.
